On 23 - 25 April 2014 the Third All Ukrainian tournament "The Student Debates on Sustainable Development" took place in Poltava State Agrarian Academy. The event was organized by a Network of Universities 'Universities and Sustainable Development' and Poltava State Agrarian Academy under the support of a joint EU\UNDP Project 'Community Based Approach to Local Development'.
Mrs. Oxana Remiga, UNDP Seniour Programme Manager and Mrs. Valentyna Aranchiy, Head of Poltava State Agrarian Academy welcomed students. In her opening speech Mrs Oksana Remiga stressed the cignificance of endevour of Ukrainian society toward sustainable development. "The widening of the network of universities that
participated in the event points to the fact that the debates' topic remains an up to date" - mentioned Mrs. Remiga in her opening speech.
CBA Project appreciates cooperation with high educational institutions in Ukraine, having as aim preparation of contemporary and future generations for understanding, supporting and implementation approach to local development with community participation. Cooperation with universities contributes to solving problem of join theoretical knowledge of educational institutions with practical experience of CBA Project.
To participate in the "Debates" more than 40 students from 14 higher education institutins from 13 regions of Ukraine came to Poltova. All the topics that were debated by the students were closely related to sustainable local development, and community participation.
On the results of hot debates in final round, team of Uzhgorod National University was named as winner. The second place got the team of Sumy State University.
The idea of student debates appeared in 2012 in the context of UN sammit on sustainable development RIO+20 in Rio-de-Janeiro. Within frameworks of preparation for the sammit in Ukraine, CBA Project proposed parnter univerisities to join all Ukrainian campaing and conduct student debates on topic of sustainable development. Since that time, student debates proved to be one of the most popular student event which allows to discuss the most vital problems using gained knowledge, analytical thinking, as well as oratorical skills.
