Zakarpatska oblast is a western part of Ukraine. It borders with four countries and such regions as Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk. Zakarpattia region territory occupies 2.1% of the total area of Ukraine with a population of about 1.26 mln. About 37% of the region population lives in cities and towns.
Zakarpatska oblast includes 13 rayons, 11 cities, 19 urban villages, 579 villages.
The largest cities and towns of the region are Uzhhorod, Mukachevo, Khust, Berehove, Vynohradiv and Chop.
Zakarpattia region is situated in the Carpathian Mountains, and depends mostly on trans-border trade, vinery and forestry. The oblast's main industry includes woodworking. There are also such industrial branches as food, light industry, and mechanical engineering. It is hard to develop agriculture industry here because of the relief and scarcity of arable area.
The EU/UNDP CBA Project Implementation in Zakarpatska Oblast
Implementation of the first phase of CBA Project commenced in Zakarpattia during March 2008. First phase was succeeded by a second phase in July 2011. Over these two phases more than 100 ths. of men, women and children of the region have benefitted from improvement in 62 schools/kindergartens, 24 healthposts, 5 water supply, 23 street-lightning and so on. This happened through joint effort of the citizens, oblast/rayon/local level governments, the EU/UNDP CBA Project and the private sponsors.
Energy Efficiency in Zakarpatska oblast
Zakarpatska oblast is also the recipient of advanced piloting quota in the area of energy efficiency in Phase 2. Under this support, the regional energy-efficiency policy was updated; adoption of energy efficient technologies and renewable energy technologies in rural areas was promoted. Zakarpatska oblast became one of the model case.
The energy strategy improvement produced a positive impact on the programme of Zakarpatska oblast. In principle, the oblast recognized the necessity of including into its strategy the micro-level interventions in the rural areas to promote innovative energy technology renewable energy sources in community participation.
Third phase of the the EU/UNDP CBA Project in Zakarpatska oblast
Third phase of the EU/UNDP CBA Project was initiated in Zakarpatska oblast with regional launching and signing of MoU which took place on 17 October 2014. 8 rayons for standard/replication components were selected for partnership in the EU/UNDP CBA Project.
Rayons selected for the EU/UNDP CBA Project: Khustskyi, Mukachivskyi, Uzhgorodskyi, Volovetskyi, Berehivskyi, Vynohradivskyi, Velykobereznianskyi, Irshavskyi.
Microprojects approved as of 4 January 2016: 24 micro projects (15 on energy saving, 6 on energy efficiency, 2 on water supply and 1 on healthcare). Around 26,100 persons will benefit from implementation of these initiatives. Total budget for the initiatives is around UAH 9.9 mln (approx. USD 446,000). The EU/UNDP CBA Project will provide around UAH 5.1 mln (USD 229,700).
2 cities supported for partnership in the EU/UNDP CBA Project within the framework of the urban development component – Uzhgorod and Khust.
Microprojects approved as of 12 January 2016: 24 micro-projects (9 in Uzhgorod and 15 in Khust). About 4,000 persons will benefit from implementation of these initiatives. Total budget for the initiatives is around UAH 9.4 mln (approximately USD 423 ths). The EU/UNDP CBA Project will provide around UAH 4.4 mln (around USD 198 ths).
